The mosquitoes were collected off North Spring Court, near Campbell and Jupiter roads, according to Garland health officials. Human cases of West Nile virus occur each year in New York City, and most cases are identified between late July and October.

Mosquitoes in Benton County are testing positive for West Nile virus.

Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellant.

There are also measures that residents can take which include dumping out outdoor containers with water inside to keep mosquitoes from breeding in them and applying bug spray that contains DEET, or another CDC-approved repellent on both clothing and skin.

According to Dr. Amy Person with the Benton-Franklin Health District, "Reports of West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes are a reminder that each of us needs to take steps to prevent mosquito bites".

When practical, wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, shoes, socks and hats outside, especially in wooded areas.

In rare cases West Nile virus can cause paralysis or death.

Be careful using repellent on the hands of children as it may irritate the eyes and mouth. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.

"If it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes", officials state in the release.

Eliminating any standing water from your property and disposing of containers that can collect water. Although 8 out of 10 individuals who become infected with WNV experience no symptoms, 1 in 5 will experience febrile illness symptoms, including headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash, with fatigue potentially lasting for weeks. The virus is then spread to humans through the bite of the infected mosquito.

Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Plus, residents should make repairs to window screens and door screens in order to keep mosquitoes outside.

About one in 150 people infected will develop a more serious illness, such as encephalitis or meningitis.
