Orlando police officer shot; 4 kids held hostage

The Orlando Police Department says one of its officers was shot while responding to a domestic violence call.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina told the Orlando Sentinel that the injured officer, who has not been identified, has undergone surgery.

"We're hoping for prayers from our community for our officer's full recovery", the station quotes Mina as saying. She said other officers arrived, cut open his shirt and appeared to be putting bandages on his neck.

"Hell, yes, I was absolutely terrified", she said.

They swarmed the apartment, near the Universal Orlando theme park.

"I got scared, and I called 911, " Martinez said. They were later taken to a nearby hotel.

"It startled me, " Santiago said. He added that the children may have been the suspect's children.

The officer is currently recovering at the hospital.

At Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orange County corrections employee Thomas Newmann sat in the back of a black pickup truck with a waving Thin Blue Line flag in support of police. Residents of the neighboring apartment complexes had to show identification and be escorted by the police.
