Harvick pulled even several times before dropping back. Larson was asked by FS1 reporter Jamie Little if the sag was because of a collision with Ryan Blaney on Lap 248 of 267 while battling for third.

Kevin Harvick is starting on the pole for Saturday night's Monster Energy Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway, where he will try to win for the fifth time this season. He took the lead from Martin Truex Jr., who was looking for his third straight Kansas win, on the outside off Turn 4 coming to the white flag.

Harvick has now won five of the first 12 races of the season including two in a row after he dominated at Dover last week. The No. 78 was not a factor most of the night and only took the lead off a restart with 15 laps to go, having stayed on the track to gain the track position. But he quickly charged into the top 10, and wound up fifth behind Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

NASCAR's top division will return to action on Saturday, as they race the All-Star Open at Charlotte.

"I thought we were going to be all right there with three or four to go, my auto just got real tight, and I chattered the right front [tire] off of Turn 4, and I was like, oh boy", said Truex.

The race was free of wrecks until the last 30 laps, when Alex Bowman and Daniel Suarez got into each other. Harvick picked up his fifth win of the season - in 12 races - after leading 79 laps. The damage ruined Larson's chances of winning, and sent Blaney slamming hard into the turn 1 wall.

The top 10 were Harvick, Truex, Logano, Larson, Denny Hamlin, Paul Menard, Erik Jones, Kurt Busch, Aric Almirola and Kyle Busch.

Lap Leaders: K. Harvick 1-32; R. Blaney 33-84; K. Harvick 85-123; R. Blaney 124-125; A. Dillon 126-129; K. Harvick 130; K. Larson 131-213; J. Logano 214-215; R. Stenhouse Jr. We just haven't been as consistent as previous year in finding it.

"Yeah, that one hurt really bad", Byron said. "We're missing something right now, just can't get the thing turned, it felt tight all night long".

The red flag set up one last sprint to the finish. But the No. 4 auto swept past Logano and Hamlin on the outside to put Truex in his sights, then closed down the lead until finally overtaking the reigning series champion with a lap to go.

After his week started on a high with the birth of his daughter, Larson was on his way to capping it with a win. But after Harvick got around him on the restart with 25 laps left, Blaney got into him as they dueled on the front-stretch, sending the No. 12 auto into the outside wall. That left team owner Chip Ganassi kicking a pit cart in frustration, and forced Larson to restart far enough back that he couldn't contend for the win.
