Terror knife attack in Paris, one killed

"The assailant passed away". He turned onto another street, and everyone scattered, the witness said.

The bloodbath follows a series of ISIS and Al Qaeda attacks in France which has seen nearly 250 killed by terrorists since early 2015. He is as of yet unidentified.

The Paris prefecture said a person who carried out the knife attack was overpowered by police, without giving any more details.

"Tonight, our city has been bruised", Hidalgo wrote on Twitter after the attack. "My first thoughts go to the victims of this heinous act".

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo also offered her prayers and said she wanted the victims to know "all Parisians are by their side". "I saw a guy lying on the floor, he was dead for me, the police arrived, they were so many". Watched people running (not sure if from or after somebody).

Congressman Norcross said that Pakistan and India both faced the same security challenges, which also concerned the United States. Additionally, non-diplomatic number plates given to hide diplomatic status for protection will also be taken back, it added.

Another witness called Gloria, 47, told the AFP news agency: "I was on a café terrace and heard four shots".

The attack reportedly occurred in the city's Opera district.

The Paris prosecutor says counterterrorism authorities are investigating Saturday's attack in a busy neighborhood of Paris' Right Bank. BFM TV said two were in a critical condition. "He was shot dead by the police".

France 24 journalist Charles Pellegrin, very near the scene, spoke to eye witnesses.

The incident happened just before 9pm on Saturday evening in Rue Monsigny in the French capital's second arrondissement where Paris's opera and landmark retail stores are located. France24 reported that police officers initially tried to taser the attacker but then fired two shots to stop him.
