National Letter Carrier Food drive happening Saturday

Volunteers are needed Saturday for the largest food drive in Dane County.

Stamp Out Hunger helped to feed over 50 million people who suffered from hunger across the U.S.in 2017. The one day a year you can place something at your mailbox and have it delivered without worrying about having proper postage. Leave bagged items at your mailbox to be picked up by your letter carrier.

Across the country, letter carriers spent Saturday collecting bags of food donations for this year's Stamp Out Hunger campaign. Patrons can fill the bags with non-perishable food items that will be collected and shared with the local churches and food banks. Now the pantry distributes over $1 million, or about 2000 pounds, of food to families in the community in need of food.

Letter carriers weren't just delivering mail Saturday, they were also picking up some heavier packages and stamping out hunger.

"There's always a need for food", says Aubrey Clark, Food Sourcing and Facilities Manager for the West Ohio Food Bank. Those making donations are asked to avoid placing items in glass containers.

"We volunteer to help stock up the food banks in the area", Jeff Wills, labor council vice president, said. "Put it out Friday", said retired Lebanon city letter carrier Millie Heston.

Recommended items include pasta, oatmeal, canola oil, peanut butter and canned goods including beans, fruit, vegetables, soup, tuna in water, meat and sauce.

"The Letter Carriers' Food Drive is more important than ever", said Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank.
