Kim Jong-un summit set for Singapore on 12 June

Earlier in the week, the US President had ruled out meeting Mr Kim at the demilitarised zone which separates North and South Korea. Mr Pompeo returned overnight with three captive Americans during his most recent trip.

Mr Trump and first lady wife, Melania, boarded the plane for about five minutes before the men stepped out, shaking hands with the President and waving to waiting media and military personnel.

Opening his remarks to the press this morning, Trump said, "This is a great honor. we want to thank Kim Jong-un who really was excellent to these three incredible people".

On the U.S. relationship with North Korea, Mr Trump said: "We're starting off on a new footing".

Nauert traveled to Pyongyang with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other State Department officials to secure the release of Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim.

Trump said on their arrival that he believed Kim wanted to bring North Korea "into the real world" and had high hopes for their planned meeting.

In March, Trump stunned the world by accepting an invitation to meet the North Korean leader for an unprecedented sit-down.The pair had previously exchanged insults and threats.

Since Trump announced plans to hold a summit with Kim, questions have been raised continually about whether the two leaders have the same objective in mind when they speak about "denuclearization".

Mr Trump has credited his "maximum pressure" campaign for drawing North Korea to the table and has vowed to keep sanctions in place until Pyongyang takes steps to denuclearise. Trump's announcement put an end to South Korean hopes that the summit would take place in the border village of Panmunjom, bringing more global attention to South Korea's part in the negotiations.

For the U.S., Singapore offers a neutral space with strict security policies that can guarantee the safety of a visiting dignitary - like President Donald Trump, for instance. Mr Trump replied that he would try his best to do so, the MFA said. But the city state was favoured by most of his advisers. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has stated that one of the US's main objectives is to ensure the "permanent, verifiable irreversible dismantling of North Korea's weapons of mass destruction program".

"You're never certain exactly what you're going to get into when you're dealing with certain governments that you don't always have a friendly relationship with", she said.
