Qantas pressured to adopt one-China policy over Taiwan

Mr Geng said foreign companies operating in China should "respect the Chinese people's national sentiment".

China has hit back at USA claims a push by Beijing to stop foreign airlines referring to Taiwan as a separate state is "Orwellian nonsense".

"This is Orwellian nonsense and part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views on American citizens and private companies", the White House statement notes.

President Donald Trump, who ran against political correctness at home, "will stand up for Americans resisting efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to impose Chinese political correctness on American companies and citizens", a White House statement released Saturday read.

China's initial request asked worldwide airlines to remove references on their websites, or in other material, that suggests Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are in any way independent from China.

The letter to airlines offered more detailed instructions on how Taiwan should be described when compared with an earlier warning in January that Taiwan not be called a separate country. Beijing considers the self-ruled, democratic island a wayward province.

The Chinese government lashed out at the United States statement, saying Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau "are all indivisible parts of China".

The US Navy is re-establishing its second fleet , responsible for the northern Atlantic Ocean to counter Russian Federation . In 2011 the fleet was disbanded for cost-saving and organisational-structure reasons.

China is threatening foreign airlines with a version of the social credit system that is being implemented domestically, where more than seven million Chinese citizens have been deemed "untrustworthy".

Saturday's White House statement is the strongest official USA response to the Chinese Communist Party's imposition of speech standards on foreign firms. While in OH on Saturday, the Guardian reports that Trump alluded to the negotiations, saying, "My group just got back from China".

According to a Chinese foreign ministry statement late on Saturday, Mr Yang told Mr Pompeo that the two countries should strengthen exchanges, maintain close communication over economic and trade issues and respect each other's "core interests and major concerns".

Beijing wants all references to the three territories to identify that they are part of China.

The article included a copy of a letter, written in Mandarin, which the newspaper said it had obtained from United Airlines, one of the original recipients.

Ms Bishop said Australia remained committed to this "one China policy".

The website of American Airlines changed its listing as of Monday to show Hong Kong and Macau as special administrative regions of China, and only classified Taiwan separately.
