PM leaves for five-day visit to Sweden, UK, Germany

India and Sweden on Tuesday chose to embolden their defence and security cooperation during the Indo-Nordic summit.

Sweden and India will strengthen their cooperation on defence, their prime ministers said on Tuesday, a move that could aid Sweden's Saab in its bid to sell its Gripen jet to replace India's Soviet-era MiG fighters. "I will be focusing on enhancing India-UK partnership in the areas of healthcare, innovation, digitisation, electric mobility, clean energy, and cyber security", the Prime Minister said.

During Modi's visit, an India-Sweden Innovation Partnership is also expected to be launched. During the three-day trip, Modi will also address the mega event "Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath" in London.

A total of 30 years has passed since the visit by Rajiv Gandhi in 1988 and Modi's visit is first such visit after him.

Mr Lofven and Mr Modi interacted with the top Swedish Business leaders on the occasion. There will be new opportunities in the defence sector. The Prime Minister's meetings with several leaders may also prove beneficial for India. This may be made easier by the agreement between London and New Delhi on swifter return of illegal Indian immigrants which had been a vexed issue repeatedly raised by the United Kingdom government. Modi also said India and Sweden will continue their close cooperation on the worldwide stage. Modi...slogans at Stockholm Arland Airport.

"Both Prime Ministers called for greater unity and stronger global partnership to counter terrorism, disrupt terrorist networks and financing, and to prevent violent extremism", it stated.

Modi said the duo, in their talks, focused on how Sweden can help India in its development journey.

Rao stated that Prime Minister Modi would be holding talks with the prime ministers from the Nordic nations, namely Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, both in the summit and through one-on-one engagements on how they could contribute to India's flagship programmes.

Sweden's Leader of the Opposition Ulf Kristersson called on visiting Indian Prime Minister Narndra Modi here on Tuesday.

After Stockholm, Modi travels to London to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, where Britain hopes to bolster its trade ties around the world in anticipation of Brexit. He will also have a brief stopover in Berlin, Germany, on April 20 while on his way back home.
