Gas prices hit 3-year high

Gas prices hit 3-year high

While gas prices in Southwest Florida remained flat over the week, the USA average is higher than it has been in more than two years, AAA reported Monday.

Four-dollars-a-gallon gasoline, not seen in the Golden State since midsummer 2014, is starting to look likely due to developments that pushed at-the-pump prices into overdrive last week. Crude prices rose more than $5 last week, the largest weekly increase in more than eight months, according to auto club AAA.

If you go to the gas pump in Baton Rouge today you should notice a slight increase in what you are paying for gas. The possibility of USA sanctions against Iran and another sponsor of the Syrian government, Russia, is driving up the price of crude oil, which increased by more than $5 last week.

San Francisco - $3.65/g, up 3.1 cents per gallon from last week's $3.62/g. Unleaded regular was selling then at an average $2.56 in Nashville.

Average retail gasoline prices in Honolulu have risen 6.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.42 per gallon on April 14, 2018, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 214 gas outlets in Honolulu. Also nationally, gas has risen 18 cents since more than a month ago.

Israel lauds US-led airstrikes on Syria as "appropriate" response
Israel said on Friday that an Iranian drone shot down in February by its air force had been fitted with explosives intended. Iran and Israel are arch enemies, as the Jewish state views Iran's regional and nuclear ambitions as an existential threat.

AAA warned drivers this week to expect an increase in gas prices because of the ongoing conflict in Syria and its impact on crude oil prices. Average Brent crude prices were US$66 per barrel in March.

"The USA is a macro market with totally different supply logistics, vast fuel resources, huge fuel storage capacity, a network of pipelines from the refineries to the distribution points, and trucking fleets which deliver fuel 24 hours per day, 365 days per year", said Alan Neesome of Sol Petroleum, which supplies the local Esso stations.

States with the highest average gasoline prices: California ($3.55), Hawaii ($3.48), Alaska ($3.22), Washington ($3.20), Nevada ($3.11), OR ($3.09), Utah ($2.97), Pennsylvania ($2.94), Idaho ($2.93) and NY ($2.80).

"In the past few years, the average date that gas prices have peaked is mid-May, which is just around the corner, and by all metrics, that could be very close to what we expect this time around", DeHaan said Monday in a news release.
