Macron: France Convinced Trump to Maintain Troops in Syria

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb denounced the violence and damage to stores and public buildings at the edges of Saturday's protests in Nantes in western France and Montpellier in the south. "If necessary, France could be ready to behave alone, nonetheless it wouldn't act in isolation".

British involvement in military interventions abroad is controversial in a country still haunted by its role in the US-led invasion of Iraq.

He said the US would be a "partner and a friend" to the Middle East but the fate of the region lay in the hands of its own people.

"So, I ordered the French armed forces to intervene tonight, as part of an international operation in coalition with the United States of America and the United Kingdom and directed against the clandestine chemical arsenal of the Syrian regime".

May said "a significant body of information including intelligence" pointed to Syrian government responsibility for a suspected chemical attack last Saturday.

Political opponents had criticized Macron for drawing a red line over chemical attacks after the unfortunate precedent set by former U.S. President Barack Obama, who had put himself in a tough spot with a similar ultimatum in 2012.

She also said that a new raft of Russian sanctions would be outlined Monday, by Steve Mnuchin, US treasury secretary.

Syrian state TV said the attack had begun on the capital, though it wasn't immediately clear what was targeted.

Markets Right Now: Stocks surge as China trade tensions ease
China has protested those moves, calling it USA meddling in an Asian conflict, and renewed warnings to Washington to stay away. The US president welcomed the speech and said he saw an end to the dispute, which has roiled markets since the start of March.

No matter his highly effective phrases, Macron couldn't must strike in Syria with out Washington's help, notably in mild of his scheduled journey to the US on April 24.

He added France had three imperatives going forward: The dismantling of the Syrian chemical weapons program, a cease-fire across Syria, and a crisis exit plan. And unlike Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau, Macron managed to avoid being ridiculed by his Indian hosts for wearing an absurd range of traditional outfits.

There are 192 signatories to the United Nations' Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The Kremlin statement on Friday further said that President "Vladimir Putin emphasized the advisability of conducting a thorough and objective investigation, until the completion of which it is not advised to voice any accusations against anyone."
It did not mention the overall number of missiles intercepted by Syrian forces.

Of course, history is important, but just as not all Muslims should be blamed for 9/11, similarly not all French Catholic should be blamed for the Dreyfus case. French anti-clericalists have surely been given everything they wanted, which included the confiscation of Church property, the dissolution and banning of religious orders and the judicial murder of large swathes of the clergy.

But our efforts have been repeatedly thwarted.

However, Trump later softened his rhetoric, suggesting he was awaiting further advice and assessment before a final decision was made.
