Failing health for former First Lady Barbara Bush

She is the mother of George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States. Bush told an interviewer, "I sat next to her once, thought she was lovely, and I think she's very happy in Alaska, and I hope she'll stay there".

She has always been considered the rock at the center of one of America's most prominent political families, as the wife of a president, the mother of another, George W. Bush, and the mother also of a former Florida governor and onetime presidential aspirant, Jeb Bush.

Barbara Bush, the wife of one USA president and the mother of a second, is in failing health and has made a decision to seek "comfort care" rather than further medical treatment. Jim McGrath, who issued a statement, said that she is surrounded by a familyand appreciates the messages and prayers she's been receiving from people. She was also diagnosed with Graves' disease in the 1980s.

During her time as First Lady, Barbara Bush focused on literacy.

The statement did not reveal the nature of Mrs Bush's ailments.

Bush, who has been married to former President George H.W. Bush for 73 years, is being cared for at their home in Houston and does not want to return to the hospital, the report said.

Mrs. Bush, 92, has been hospitalized several times in Houston, Texas, over the past year to be treated for chronic pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure, her family has said. "I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!"

Her other sons, former President George W. Bush and former Gov. Jeb Bush, have been in and out visiting her the past week. "He is the best - thoughtful and loving". They married in 1945 while he was on leave from wartime service as a naval officer.

Smith College awarded Barbara Bush with an honorary degree in 1989.
