Blizzard conditions shut down highways in eastern Colorado

The snow is mostly done falling in Denver, but things are just getting started for the Eastern Plains as a windy, wet spring snowstorm moves across Colorado.

Here's the afternoon forecast from the National Weather Service. Visibility issues will be a problem for all of us with winds gusting over 40 miles per hour as the snow is coming down. And this one is particularly strong.

About 0.1 of an inch ice accumulation is possible and 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible through the day with 2-4 inches expected overnight. And to the west, in the panhandle, snow accumulation was already being reported, Gomez said, with 3 inches recorded in Gordon. And, strong wind combined with bands of snow will continue to cause travel problems.

Blizzard warnings are up for several states and some areas could get up to two feet of snow! Blizzard conditions are supposed to last through the weekend in some areas.

Rain mixed with freezing rain is expected before 10 a.m. moving into rain mixed with snow before noon. Large hail also fell in Parker in southeastern South Dakota while pea-sized hail fell in nearby Sioux Falls.

Emergency management officials say if you stay home, it is a good idea to make sure your home emergency kit is well-stocked, too, due to the possibility of power failures.

Now, National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has placed most Northwest Iowa counties in a Blizzard Warning, as also were the five closest Northeast Nebraska counties and all but a few northern counties South Dakota near the North Dakota border.
