Mattis does not rule out airstrike against Syria

"Probably after the fact".

On Sunday, Trump tweeted: "Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria. Very tough", the President said. "He will. Everybody will".

The U.S. military has a wide range of warplanes and other capabilities in the Middle East that could carry an attack. A Navy destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, was underway in the eastern Mediterranean after completing a port call in Cyprus. The Pentagon chief said he would not rule out a USA military strike against Syria in response to a suspected poison gas.

Asked Monday if Putin bears any responsibility for the weekend attack, Trump said, "He may". "To me there's not much of a doubt, but the generals will figure it out", Trump said.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona said Assad heard Trump's signal that he wanted to withdraw from Syria and, "emboldened by American inaction", launched the attack. "I think that it is outrageous to say that the president of the United States green-lit something as atrocious as the actions that have taken place over the last several days", she said.

In his remarks Monday, Mattis implied that Russian Federation may also have been involved in the attack.

Trump is set to meet with his National Security Council on Monday to form a retaliation plan. Monday was the first day on the job for Bolton, who has previously advocated military action against Syria.

Russian Federation was supposed to guarantee the disposal of Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons in September 2013, but President Bashar al-Assad's regime is suspected of conducting repeated gas attacks since then. The United Nations Security Council will also meet Monday to decide on an worldwide response to the alleged attack.

An American official said the USA was discussing with allies whether they would participate in a retaliatory strike.

Trump planned two meetings with senior national security aides on Syria, in addition to a previously scheduled late-afternoon White House conference with leaders of USA military commands around the world.

Acting Secretary of State John Sullivan spoke by phone Monday with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

Syrian state-run media report the government didn't use any chemical weapons and that the accusations were meant to "hinder the Army's advance".

The Pentagon released a statement on Sunday night stating that reports claiming the USA had attacked an airbase in western Syria were untrue. A group that monitors Syria's civil war said the airstrikes killed 14 people, including Iranians active in Syria.

The Pentagon already denied the USA was behind a missile strike on a Syrian air base that happened early Monday morning local time.

As U.S. officials consider whether and how to respond, they are looking at what type of chemical agent was used.

Syria has been accused multiple times of using toxic weapons including sarin gas in the country's seven-year war, which has killed more than 350,000 people.
