Cosby retrial to continue with defense opening arguments

Cosby retrial to continue with defense opening arguments

Bill Cosby's lawyer has launched a fierce attack on the comedian's accuser, calling her a con artist who took advantage of Cosby's grief and loneliness over his son's murder to gain his trust before framing him for sexual assault.

"Money, money and lots more money", said celebrity attorney Tom Mesereau, who prior to the Cosby case had defended Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson and Suge Knight. Instead, it's about the 50-plus women who have alleged the comedian drugged and sexually assaulted them.

Bill Cosby arrives with publicist Andrew Wyatt, left, on Tuesday, the second day of his sexual assault retrial. Nicolle played the roles of Davina and Danielle on the show from 1990-1992 and knew Bill well.

The amount had been confidential - and was kept out of the first trial - but a judge ruled that both sides could discuss it at this one.

In the deposition, Cosby said he gave Constand three half-tablets of the cold and allergy medicine Benadryl. She was a Temple University staff member at the time.

"Hollywood is a treacherous place", Mesereau said as he unspooled a retelling of Cosby's meteoric rise to the heights of stardom. He even brought up what could be used as a weapon of the defense: how Constand earned $3.38 million off a settlement with Cosby in 2006.

Cosby is charged with drugging and assaulting another woman in 2004. He says the encounter was consensual. Authorities charged her with disorderly conduct before releasing the actress. She ran in front of Cosby toward a bank of TV cameras as the comedian walked into a suburban Philadelphia courthouse for the start of his sexual assault retrial.

Rochelle, 38, of Little Falls, New Jersey had written on her torso the names of some of the many women who have accused Cosby of assault.

Rochelle was intercepted by sheriff's deputies and led away in handcuffs. She never told her agent or her parents about the alleged assault.

Inside the stately old courthouse in this hardscrabble suburban Philadelphia town, the comedian Bill Cosby rocks back and forth in a padded chair reserved for the defendant in a criminal case thick with allegations of drugs and sex. She was quickly detained.

The worldwide women's movement Femen claimed responsibility for organising the protest, saying Ms Rochelle was one of its activists.

Monday's protester did not reach Cosby and he was unharmed. Cosby was charged shortly before the statute of limitations was set to expire.

In his opening argument Monday, Steele said Cosby plied Constand with the pills without ever revealing what they really were.

It made no mention of the alleged assault, Thomas said, because she had planned to give it to her mom. Cosby's lawyers want the man removed as a juror.

"At the moment, 61 women aren't allowed to testify against him".

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand and Dickinson have done. That trial, also at the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, ended with a hung jury.

The other shift since the first trial 10 months ago is the eruption of the #MeToo movement.

Cosby seemed startled by the commotion as protesters chanted at him, but he was not touched and is uninjured.

But now she said she wanted to express the anger of the other women and had chosen to do it topless so as to use her body as "a political tool".

After the defense laid out its case, the prosecution called its first witness to explain why a sexual assault victim might behave that way.

"Andrea Constand didn't come to us", Steele told the jury.
