Corbyn faces renewed calls to tackle Labour anti-Semitism

The Labour Party has distanced itself from these groups, which were revealed by a report in the Sunday Times that looked into the 20 biggest pro-Corbyn Facebook groups.

This week we have seen a clear expression of the pain and hurt that has been caused to Jewish members of our party and the wider Jewish community by anti-Semitic abuse and language, and by the reality of anti-Semitism being denied and downplayed by others.

She caused further anger with a Facebook posting - subsequently taken down - claiming the row was being "stirred up to attack Jeremy, as we all know".

However, Ms Shawcroft, who until Monday served as chair of Labour's internal disputes panel, was found to have called for his suspension.

Last week, Corbyn apologised for arguing on Facebook in 2012 against the removal of an anti-Semitic mural that depicted a group of Jewish men playing Monopoly on the backs of a group of emaciated people.

"I think the Labour Party needs to do much more". I am deeply sorry for having done so.

"You do not leap to judgement in advance and when that judgment is made we implement it and we implement it ruthlessly because we do not tolerate any form of racism in our party".

The comedian and activist, 56, stepped up to represent the party after Christine Shawcroft, who was at the centre of the anti-Jewish row, resigned on Saturday evening.

The group of Labour backbenchers, led by Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhan McDonagh, want Ms Shawcroft to be removed from the party's ruling National Executive Committee (NEC).

After the email was leaked, Shawcroft announced that she would step down as chair of the party's disputes panel, which oversees internal disciplinary cases; but she did not say whether she meant to remain on the NEC.

They also stressed that the party not connected in any way to the controversial Facebook groups and would expel members who posted hate-filled messages online. In 2016 he said he regretted making those remarks.

"People have a right to speak out and a right to demonstrate and that surely is something that is intrinsic in any democratic society". This campaign, the motion added, was "bringing the party into disrepute".

He referred to "rising levels of anti-Semitism around the world", pointing the finger at right-wingers in Poland and France.

"Nobody should be vilified for opposing anti-Semitism".

Though the story went nowhere, it was remembered by the Jewish community, Mr. Pollard said, adding that "Corbyn's first statement about freedom of speech genuinely shocked people".

"As one of the former leading political and financial supporters of the Labour party, of which I was a member for so many decades, I no longer feel any affinity with, or connection to, what it seems to have become", Garrard told the British newspaper The Observer in remarks that were widely republished in other British news publications, including its parent publication The Guardian.
