Apple Just Hired Former Google AI Chief John Giannandrea

On Friday Patently Apple posted a report titled "A new Analytical Report Claims that Apple is on a Wild Hiring Spree for Engineers that Could Boost Siri's Popularity".

The New York Times on Wednesday published the text of the letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, which reportedly has more than 3,100 employee signatures, calling for a halt to its work on the effort known as Project Maven.

Cook wrote in an email to Apple staff that was obtained by the NYT, "Our technology must be infused with the values we all hold dear".

Forum discussion at Twitter.

John Giannandrea, who is affectionately called J.G.by colleagues, was absorbed by Google when the search giant bought Metaweb.

With John Giannandrea's move to Apple, do you think that the company's A.I. initiatives will now have a better chance of dominating the artificial intelligence arena?

Duffer Brothers Sued For Allegedly Stealing Idea For 'Stranger Things'
The Duffer Brothers ended up producing Stranger Things for Netflix, which debuted on the streaming giant in 2016. Netflix did not immediately respond to Den of Geek's inquiries for a comment.

Giannandrea will likely be tasked with fixing Siri at Apple, which has been deemed "embarrassingly inadequate" in new products like the HomePod. Metaweb was then creating a database of the world's knowledge which Google finally installed into its system and became the undefended champion of search engines.

Users have often spoken of what they view as Siri's inferior quality when compared to Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. As Google's machine learning guru, Giannandrea helped integrate deep learning AI into a number of products, most prominently Google Assistant.

Apple, which was quick to develop its voice-based digital assistant Siri, fell behind with no access to data, the research talent and resources to approach AI development with the same robustness as the rivals.

On the other hand, Jeff Dean who co-founded Google Brain will be taking over Giannandrea's spot. Positioned as the iPhone's new flagship feature, the iPhone 4s launch itself was pushed back by a few months so that Apple could iron out a few of lingering performance issues with Siri.

While Apple wants to explore building services with neural networks, it wants to do so without compromising the privacy of user data. Machine learning experts are in high demand in Silicon Valley, with salaries often exceeding eight figures.
