Patriots trading Brandin Cooks to LA for draft picks

Patriots trading Brandin Cooks to LA for draft picks

This is a sign Tom Brady is retiring.

It also means the Rams won't continue talks about acquiring Odell Beckham Jr. from the Giants.

New England has acquired another pick in the upcoming draft by moving one of their receivers.

The reality is probably a lot more boring: The Patriots likely didn't want to pay Cooks.

The trade also appears to be a strategic move on the part of the Patriots: Cooks is entering the fifth year of his rookie contract, and he can become a free agent after the 2018 season.

Cooks is actually a significant upgrade over departed Rams wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Our Albert Breer says Rams head coach Sean McVay has always been fond of Cooks and explored trading for him past year, before the Saints traded Cooks to New England.

Brandin Cooks gets traded to the Rams as Patriots get another first-rounder. It just wasn't expected that he'd be dealt one year later, when trades have taken over the NFL.

This trade works for both teams as the Rams get a receiver they need and the Patriots get more picks in the draft.

The Giants have reportedly made it clear to any potential suitors that OBJ isn't going anywhere for less than two first round draft picks - which is an exorbitant ask for any player. Not exactly classic Belichick manipulating the draft board, so don't expect that to happen, either.

She has played in several Ladies European Tour events and represented her country in the 2016 Olympic Golf Tournament. It was the first time since his last PGA Tour victory in 2012 that Poulter had consecutive rounds of 65 or better.

They now own two picks in the first and second rounds - 23, 31, 43 and 63. Now, with Brady turning 41 in August, it would be shocking if the Patriots didn't draft a signal-caller.

This trade gives New England enviable draft capital.

The New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams are back in the news. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report news of the deal.

Why did the Patriots make this trade?

With that said, it's not like the cupboard is bare.

The Patriots' current WR depth chart includes Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Kenny Britt.

The Rams are all in on a Super Bowl run.

Cooks, who becomes the latest of several big-name players to join the Rams within the past month, is set to make $8.459 million this season after earning just $781,599 in 2017.
