Stephen Hawking: His quotes in context

Stephen Hawking: His quotes in context

Look outward toward the dimmest possible star you can see.

Other former pupils, neighbours and people inspired to take up the pursuit of science paid tribute to the cosmology giant in the condolence book.

But to the average person, it can be hard to understand just what was at the centre of Hawking's research.

And will we actually see the Sheldon/Amy wedding this season? In due course, he would achieve extraordinary successes against the severest physical disabilities. Doctors said he had only a few years to live. Trapped in a body that betrayed him, his brain became untethered. He was born in Oxford and moved to St Albans, Hertfordshire, at eight.

Hawking's views on his species are hard to pin down, and for every inspiring quote such as this one, which appeared in Der Spiegel on October 17, 1988, there's another more grounding assessment.

NASA tweets on the passing of Stephen Hawking.

Hawking, known for his work with black holes and relativity, had sought "new links between the very large (the cosmos) and the very small (atoms and quantum theory) and to gain deeper insights into the very beginning of our universe", according to Hawking's colleague Martin Rees, an astronomer with the University of Cambridge. He acknowledged imperfection. And he never pretended to have all the answers - pointing out that the known universe is expanding in a snowball effect to an unknown conclusion.

"My expectations were reduced to zero when I was 21".

Russian Federation summons British ambassador
UK-Russia relations have been fractious ever since the assassination of another former Russian spy, Alexander Litvinenko, in 2006. Like Britain, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council. " Many of us looked at a post-Soviet Russia with hope".

Hawking died Tuesday at the age of 76 a family spokesman confirmed. "You are the next generation of big thinkers and thought leaders that will shape the future for generations to come", he wrote.

A book of condolence at Stephen Hawking's former college in Cambridge has been signed by people from around the world. The two men had been working on a more limited type of "singularity theorem" that required an unreasonably restrictive assumption. Sciama made a point of bringing Hawking and me together, and it did not take Hawking long to find a way to use my theorem in an unexpected way, so that it could be applied (in a time-reversed form) in a cosmological setting, to show that the space-time singularity referred to as the "big bang" was also a feature not just of the standard highly symmetrical cosmological models, but also of any qualitatively similar but asymmetrical model.

Adding: "My goal is simple". Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure.

"RIP Stephen Hawking. Genuinely very sad to hear that". For decades, Hawking enchanted scientists and science lovers alike by making groundbreaking discoveries about the origins of the universe and then translating these ideas for millions of non-scientists worldwide.

While actor Eddie Redmayne remembered him as a "ladies man", the official Twitter account of 'The Big Bang Theory', a TV series that witnessed appearances of the famed professor, also remembered him. As a borderline candidate, he had to undergo a rigorous viva examination by eminent academics to prove himself.

"We at Starmus (the International Festival of Astronomy, Science, Arts and Knowledge) were privileged to spend quiet time with Stephen, and will miss him badly", he said. Perhaps we don't always acknowledge it as such, but this wider understanding helps us to come to terms with some of the terrible conflicts which humans inflict upon each other on Earth.

For Hawking, it was a chance to shed something unnecessary to him. "We will keep this symbol in our hearts and follow the path he craved for us". He refused to let it be an obstacle to his work.
