Next Hearthstone Expansion Is Called "The Witchwood", Brings New Mechanics

Next Hearthstone Expansion Is Called

Something spooky is stirring in the heart of The Witchwood, the next expansion for Blizzard's digital card game Hearthstone.

"Dark magic has twisted the creatures of the forest and set them loose upon the Gilnean capital in Azeroth, but King Genn Greymane and his lycanthropic subjects won't make for easy prey", Blizzard said in an announcement.

The expansion brings a few new gameplay systems to Hearthstone. The Year of the Raven is due to arrive in mid-April, and Blizzard revealed today the first of the card game's three planned expansions for the next year. Echo, allows you to play as many copies of that card as you want during a turn, meaning if you had 9 mana, you could play three copies of Phantom Militia.

There's also a new Echo keyword that enables a card to be played multiple times on the same turns, and Rush, which can attack minions the same turn that they come into play-similar to the Charge keyword, except it's only against minions.

Some cards in The Witchwood will incentivize players to build decks using only odd- or even-cost cards.

Blizzard has just announced a new Hearthstone expansion, which looks like a gamechanger.

Information in this press release that involves Blizzard Entertainment's expectations, plans, intentions or strategies regarding the future, including statements about pricing, preorder dates, release dates, features, and functionality of the The Witchwood expansion for Hearthstone, as well as the release dates, features, and functionality of Monster Hunts, are forward-looking statements that are not facts and involve a number of risks and uncertainties. At the start of the game, Genn Greymane-a neutral Legendary minion with 6/5 and costing 6 mana-will grant even-cost decks by decreasing the player's Hero Power to 1-mana instead of the standard 2. Their shapeshifting lore causes cards to swap their attack and health every turn it is in your hand - this means players can wait until the right moment to play their minions.

The Witchwood will also offer players a new single-player mode called Monster Hunt. Players can pre-purchase a special Witchwood 50-pack card bundle, which comes with 20 bonus packs and the "In the Dark Wood" card, for free. The Hero Power upgrade from Baku the Mooneater is the same as the one from Justicar Trueheart, as a post on Reddit reveals. This one-time-only bundle is available on any platform for $49.99 (one purchase per account).

The Witchwood will be released sometime in April.
