Fashion Icon, Hubert de Givenchy Dies At 91

Then over the course of the meal, Givenchy, who was only two years her senior, fell under her charm and he ended up asking her to drop round to his Paris studio the next morning.

His partner Philippe Venet, a former haute couture designer, confirmed the news to the AFP news agency.

In 1988 he sold it to luxury conglomerate LVMH and retired years later.

"Farewell, Hubert de Givenchy, whose work with Audrey Hepburn defined the relationship between designer and muse, but who was also so much more", wrote New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman on Twitter. "It is with huge sadness that we inform you that Hubert Taffin de Givenchy has died", he said.

Celebrities who clamored for "the Audrey look" included actress Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Grace of Monaco and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Hepburn previously said of the designer, "Everyone wants to look lovely and at least I feel handsome when I'm in his clothes and they give me great confidence. He is far more than a couturier, he is a creator of personality", Hepburn once said of her friend, who was at her bedside at the end of her life in Switzerland.

With typical discretion, Givenchy made no comment, only that he had not been consulted about the appointments. He credited Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga, his mentor, with inspiring this aesthetic.

In a more daytime look during her visit in Paris, she also wore a tweed suit designed by Hubert De Givenchy, proving that his designs weren't just for evenings.

With his flawless manners and old-school charm, Mr Givenchy was the very acme of French elegance and refinement.

He first opened his own design house in 1952, known as the Plaine Monceau in Paris.

The fashion giant also developed a perfume collection for Hepburn called L'Interdit and Le de Givenchy, with the actor serving as the face of the fragrance.

Since Givenchy's 1995 departure, modern-day designing heavyweights like John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Riccardo Tisci have all had stints with the house, once again making it a favorite of Hollywood heavy hitters. Last year, the group hired Clare Waight Keller, formerly of Richemont's Chloe, as its creative chief.
