International Solar Alliance: Focus was on capacity building, says MEA spokesperson

While addressing at the International Solar Alliance (ISA) at Delhi's Rashtra Bhavan, PM Modi emphasizes to provide low-priced electricity and maximum utilization of solar energy.

French President Emmanuel Macron's progressing India visit is probably going to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's drives on relieving the impacts of environmental change with the utilization of sustainable power source. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations, that are traditionally oil exporting nations, have also confirmed their participation.

In his speech, PM Modi said, "We want a solar revolution not just in India but the world. It has been considered as a life nurturer", Modi said at the summit.

"We need to remove all obstacles and scale up", Macron said. "We had allocated euro 300 million (USD 370 million) for solar projects and this commitment has been met".

It was also underlined that it would be the "endeavour" of the ISA Member States to achieve sustainability by generating growth, enhancing skills and creating jobs and unleashing entrepreneurship by fostering innovation and increasing incomes.

He further said that solar solutions are the way to encourage innovation.

The summit is underway at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of President of India.

"All of us her have experienced global warming". They did not wait and stop because some countries (US and others) just chose to leave the floor and leave the Paris agreement.

Modi also called for a strong and professional ISA Secretariat located in Gurugram.

Officials and experts are hoping that the ISA summit will give the required political push for the implementation of respective solar roadmaps to deploy solar energy in member countries. "With ISA Summit, we bring capabilities closer to needs", he said in a tweet.

The ISA's major objectives include global deployment of over 1,000 GW of solar generation capacity and mobilisation of investment of over Dollars 1 trillion into solar energy by 2030.

Macron said the alliance needed to identify solar projects in every single member country. "It is common good and it is for the development of all countries", he said. "India will begin the solar technology mission to bridge the gap in solar technology".

ISA is a treaty-based intergovernmental organisation, the first of its kind to be based in India. There was a consensus that every country that is a United Nations member should be able to join.

It said that the selection of consultancy firms for undertaking activities such as project identification, project formulation, pre-feasibility study etc. under the PPF will be done from among the list of consultancy firms empanelled by Exim Bank of India.

President Macron said that countries represented at ISA represent three-fourths of the world population. "We have got 70 projects from various countries with a call of Expression of Interest", Tripathy told As per a report from Mercom India, India crossed just over 20 gigawatts of solar energy production in January. He also stressed on the development of regulatory aspects and standards.

Of these, 100 GW is to come from solar and 60 GW from wind. Renewable energy only contributes 18 per cent of India's energy demands.

The ISA has also inked joint financial partnership declarations with the African Development Bank (AFDB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Green limited Bank (GCF), and the new development (NDB).

The coalition has already launched three programmes.
