Northern California police refuse to cooperate in upcoming ICE raids

- Federal immigration officials are reportedly preparing for a major sweep in Northern California after the director of ICE threatened to target California for becoming a sanctuary state. California officially became a "sanctuary state" at the beginning of January, meaning state and local law enforcement are prohibited in most cases from working with federal agents to deport illegal immigrants.

But Homan disputes that notion.

Becerra and former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, now the University of California president, spoke at a news conference urging young immigrants to apply to remain in the country after a federal judge prevented Trump from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

The new plan will eventually be rolled out nationwide, although it remains to be seen how many law enforcement agencies will volunteer.

"They've been criticizing sanctuary jurisdictions since Day One", he said of Trump administration officials. The number could go up if officers come across other undocumented immigrants in the course of their actions and make what are known as collateral arrests, it said.

Pique, however, was upbeat about their chances of turning the tie around. "I've been at Espanyol since the age of six", he said. From there, the game went in a direction we didn't want and we complicated things. "It doesn't hurt to lose our streak here.

California's attorney general said Wednesday he is concerned about open-ended immigration sweeps at a time he and other state officials say the Trump administration should be concentrating on deporting unsafe felons.

The Oakland City Council on Tuesday voted to formally end all law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration officials.

The reports of imminent raids drew swift and angry responses from California lawmakers Wednesday, who called the plans retaliatory and said they would break apart families. "It's as simple as that", Mr. Homan said. "This vast immigration dragnet is purpose-built to instill fear in our communities".

California Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein sent a letter to Homan Wednesday expressing concern that "rather than focusing efforts on violent criminals, raids carried out in neighborhoods and workplaces could result in the deportation of individuals who are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time". "Now the administration is targeting immigrants to make a political statement", Khanna, who represents California's 17 Congressional District, which encompasses much of Silicon Valley, said in a statement.

Attorney General Xavier Becerra said while it is the federal government's responsibility to protect the nation's borders, the goal should be public safety, not deporting otherwise law-abiding immigrants who are in the country illegally. "Our community is ready to stand with our undocumented neighbors, with many of us, including myself, willing to risk arrest in order to protect our values".
